Can
  • Present Ability: For example, "I can swim" means you have the ability to swim.
  • Permission: It is used to ask for or grant permission. For example, "Can I go to the bathroom?" or "You can use my phone."
  • Informal Requests: For example, "Can you pass the salt?
Could
  • Past Ability: "Could" is often used to talk about past ability. For example, "When I was younger, I could run very fast."
  • Polite Requests: It is used to make polite requests. For example, "Could you please pass me the salt?" It's considered more polite than using "can" for requests.
  • Possibility: "Could" can be used to express a possibility, especially in hypothetical or conditional situations. For example, "If he studied more, he could pass the exam."

  • That's my book. (The book belongs to me.)

  • "my" is used before a noun to describe ownership, 
  • while "mine" is used on its own to indicate possession, replacing the noun it refers to.
