What are relative clauses?

 Relative clauses give us more information about a noun (a person, place, thing, or idea) in a sentence.

The man who fixed my car is very friendly.

My brother, who lives in Canada, is coming to visit.

This is the restaurant where we had dinner last night.

London, which is the capital of England, is very busy in summer.

The movie that we watched yesterday was amazing.

We gebruiken relative clauses om extra informatie te geven over mensen of dingen.

Defining vs non-defining 

Defining clauses geven noodzakelijke informatie. Als je de clause weglaat klopt de zin niet meer.

"The woman that lives next door is a doctor."

"This is the restaurant where I met your mother"

Non-defining clauses geven extra informatie. Het is leuk om te weten, maar niet noodzakelijk.

"Mrs. Smith, who lives next door, is a doctor."

"This house, which was built in 1948, once belonged to my parents"

Defining vs non-defining 

Defining clauses give essential info. If you take out the clause, the sentence doesn't make sense.

"The woman that lives next door is a doctor."

"This is the restaurant where I met your mother"

Non-defining clauses give extra info. It's nice to know, but not essential for the sentence.

"Mrs. Smith, who lives next door, is a doctor."

"This house, which was built in 1948, once belonged to my parents"

Defining or not?

1. The girl who lives next door is my best friend.
   
2. My phone, which I bought last year, is already broken.
   
3. The park where we used to play has been closed.
   
4. My uncle, who travels a lot for work, is visiting us next week.
   
5. The dress that she wore to the party was beautiful.
   
6. Amsterdam, which is famous for its canals, is very popular with tourists.
   
7. This is the book that helped me pass my exam.
   
8. Mr. Brown, who retired last month, used to teach us history.
   
9. The house where Shakespeare was born is now a museum.
   
10. I have a friend who speaks six languages.

Pronouns

Relative clauses often start with a relative pronoun 

(who/which/whose/that)

You CAN'T use "that" in non-defining relative clauses.

"My sister, that is ugly, went to the store"

"My sister, who is ugly, went to the store"

"That building, that was a hospital, is used as a hotel"

"That building, which was a hospital, is used as a hotel"
