Reported speech

I can talk about what other people have said using reported speech

p. 131 and 133 Student's Book

Reported speech 

Reported speech is when we tell someone what another person said/told/asked/explained by taking it out of quotations.

"You are wrong" she said. --> She said I was wrong

"Give me your charger" he asked. --> He asked me to give him my charger

Two things to pay attention to: pronouns and verbs

Pronouns: make sure to change the pronouns so the meaning doesn't change

- Ann: "I paint pictures" -> Ann said she painted pictures 

"What is your favourite music" my dad asked--> My dad asked me what my favourite music was.

Time: indirect speech is always one step in the past because when you say what someone else said that had already happened.

Rewrite in reported speech:
"I have a toothache."

1. He said that I had a toothache.
2. He said that he has a toothache.
3. He said that he had a toothache.
4. He said that you have a toothache

How old are you?
Reported speech of this question is ...

1. He asked how old was I
2. He asked how old are you
3. He asked how old I was
4. He asked how old am I

Turn into reported speech:
James: 'When is your birthday?''

1. James asked him when his birthday is.
2. James asked me when your birthday is.
3. James asked me when my birthday is.
4. James asked me when my birthday was.

Julie: "I want to go out."
reported speech

1. Julie said that I want to go out
2. Julie said that she want to go out.
3. Julie said that she wanted to go out.
4. Julie said that she had wanted to go out.

Rewrite to reported speech.

"Are you tired?"

1. He asked if I am tired
2. He asked if you are tired.
3. He asked am I tired?
4. He asked if I was tired

Rewrite in reported speech.

"I have a headache."

1. He said that I had a headache.
2. He said that he has a headache.
3. He said that he had a headache.
4. he said that you have a headache

What is the correct reported speech for 'I love this book'?

1. She says, 'I love that book.'
2. She said she loved that book.
3. She said, 'I love this book.'
4. She said she loves this book.

Rewrite to reported speech:
"Have you ever met anyone famous?"

1. He asked have you ever met anyone famous.
2. He asked me weather I had ever met anyone famous
3. He asked me whether I had ever met anyone famous.
4. He asked me whether I did ever meet anyone famous

Rewrite to reported speech:
'I can't find my hairbrush.'

1. Gemma said I couldn't find my hairbrush.
2. Gemma said she can't find her hairbrush
3. Gemma said she couldn't find her hairbrush
4. Gemma is not brushing her hair.
