Vragen: Desegregation of the University of Alabama 

Volgens de wet waren alle rassen gelijk. De mensen in het zuiden van de US wilden dit niet en bedachten: 'seperate but equal' Blanke en Afro-Amerikaanse mensen waren gelijk maar werden wel gescheiden. Er waren aparte zwembaden, scholen etc.

In 1963 bepaald het hooggerechtshof 

dat Vivian Malone en James Hood 

toegelaten moesten worden tot 

de universiteit van Alabama.

George Wallace de gouveneur van Alabama had 

zijn kiezers beloofd de rassenscheiding altijd te 

handhaven. Hij ging voor de ingang van de universiteit 

staan om te zorgen dat Vivian en James niet naar binnen konden.

1963 –    a federal district judge ordered the university of Alabama to accept Vivian Malone and James Hood

In 1963 bepaalde een federale rechter dat Vivian Malone moest worden toegelaten tot de Universiteit van Alabama.

George Wallace wilde dit voorkomen omdat hij had beloofd de 'segregation' in stand te houden.

Toen Vivian voor het eerst  naar binnen wilde gaan

ging hij in de deuropening staan om te zorgen dat ze er niet langs kon. Dit heette de  

the stand at the schoolhouse door.

Uiteindelijk heeft de president van de US het opgelost door te dreigen met het leger.

Jaren later wilde Wallace zelf president worden maar tijdens het campagne voeren werd hij neergeschoten.hij neergeschoten.

Ze wilde voorkomen dat het communism zich zou uitbreiden vanuit China. Dachten dat Vietnam een makkelijk klein land was om een statement mee te maken.

Ze kregen het niet voor elkaar om de Vietcong te bestrijden. Ze waren veel slimmer, bijvoorbeeld door het graven van tunnels waardoor ze konden ontsnappen.

Forrest : We were always looking for this guy named Charlie

De communisten in het zuiden hadden een guerilla leger en werden de Viet Cong genoemd. afgekort VC.  In het leger alfabet is dat Victor Charlie.

De Amerikaanse soldaten waren altijd bang om plotseling overvallen te worden door de Viet Cong. 

Forrest zegt daarover : 'we were always looking for this guy named Charlie.'

Veterans develop health issues

De Amerikanen gebruikten napalm in de oorlog. Napalm bestaat uit benzine waar iets aan is toegevoegd dat maakt dat het kleeft. Het brand sneller en langer en de brandende spetters blijven overal op plakken,

Het werd daarom sticky fire genoemd,

Het gebruik van Napalm zorgde voor heftige protesten tegen de oorlog in de USA.

Het veroorzaakte later ook ernstige gezondheidsproblemen bij de Amerikaanse soldaten.

Lieutenant Dan’s wish to die

Forrest shot in the buttock

Lieutenant Dan denkt dat alles al vast staat in het leven. Hij gelooft dat het zijn lotsbestemming is om met eer te sterven op het slagveld. Net als zijn voorvaderen.

Forrest redt iedereen van zijn eenheid. Dus ook Lieutenant Dan die hij daardoor de mogelijkheid om als oorlogsheld te sterven ontneemt.

Forrest redt Bubba ook maar Bubba sterft.

1. What was the goal of this ping pong diplomacy?

Amerika en China hadden geen diplomatieke relatie, ze leefden op gespannen voet samen als grootmachten van de wereld. Communisme vs kapitalisme. Het doel van de ping pong diplomacy was om deze twee landen dichter bij elkaar te brengen door het organiseren van ping pong competities.

Het werkte. Door deze wedstrijden ontstond er een voorzichtige diplomatieke relatie.

Je kunt een vieze bonbon uitkiezen en in het leven kan het tegenzitten maar daarna kan het altijd weer beter worden. 

Forrest hoeft dus niet bang te zijn  voor al het onbekende dat op zijn pad zal komen.
