Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Homework for today
1. As preparation for the next lesson review unit 1.1. – 1.4 (edition 2) using the videos in Itslearning and/or textbook.
2. Worksheet Elements Compounds Mixtures with answer key (if not done during the lesson)
3. Chemical Calculations Week 2 - hand in in itslearning if you have been requested to do so (see feedback in SomToday period 2) and/or if you want to show motivation and/or if you want feedback.
4. Make a list of the purification techniques you find in unit 1.
Prepare a large A3 papier with a table of 7 x 11 columns (see attachment) for the next lesson. Read already the assignment in the attachment.

Slide 4 - Open vraag

Does the model below represent a mixture or a pure substance? Explain your answer using the words molecules and atoms.

timer
2:00

Slide 5 - Open vraag

Answer: mixture
Mixtures contain multiple molecules.
In this case elements and compounds.
Each molecule can contain one or more types of atoms.
Molecule with one type: element.
Molecule with more types: compound.
Also a pure substance can either be elements or compounds.

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Objective of separation

Substances are separated.
Mixtures are purified.
Using properties: density, boiling point, solubility, and others.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Separation Techniques activity
Subject objective: you will learn about the separation techniques.
Languague objective: you will learn to describe seperation techniques in English and in Dutch.

We will work in 3 rounds to fill in the table.
Round 1: per technique each assignment (see next slides with example)
Round 2: for each assignment all the techniques
Round 3-4: fill in as much as possible of the table.

Sources: textboo, videos in itslearning, internet
Example: follows for Sieving
When done: fill in rest of the table

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Description: Briefly explain how this separation technique works.
Dutch:
look up the Dutch word.
(everybody)
Zeven
By shaking a sieve
particles smaller than
the mesh size
fall through the sieve leaving larger particles on the sieve

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Visual representation: look for a diagram explaining the separation technique
Mixture: Which kind of mixture can you separate with this separation technique?
Property: What physcial or chemical property is the separation based on?

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Keywords: what keywords are important in this separation technique
Example from daily life: Look for a situation from daily life in which you come across this separation technique.
Sand pit
Separating flour in  mill
Gravel of all sizes at the DIY store
sieve
mesh size

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

Round 1
Per room fill in
one or two horizontal lines
(7 rooms)

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Round 2
Per room fill in
one vertical line

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

Round 3 and 4
(if enough time)
In random groups of 3 fill in as much as possible of the table.

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

What did you think of this activity?
😒🙁😐🙂😃

Slide 15 - Poll

In which would you like to complete the table and check your understanding?
By listening and looking at a 45 minute presentation (by Mrs Hainebach on her YouTube channel)
By listening and looking at a online live presentation by Mrs Hainebach
By looking at You Tube videos SELECTED by Mrs Hainebach --> itslearning
By studying the textbook and doing summary + workbook questions

Slide 16 - Poll

Programme Today
To start 4 techniques briefly explained, 9 MC-questions,
then ±45-60 min independent work.
By the end of this lesson you can:
- name the ten separation techniques and describe them
- give for each separation technique the property it is based on
- determine for a mixture which separation technique is best
- draw a diagram representing each separation technique

Programme Today
Revise and evaluate unit 1 (Quizizz).
Starter exercise: go to the website
https://askmichellechemistry.blogspot.com/p/glossary.html
You will be assigned several letters.
Check the words with those letters.
If they fit with unit 1, copy paste the word and the definition into the chat of Zoom.
With the selected words we will do an activity this or a next lesson.
