Slide 10 - Quizvraag

Sometimes stories are a good way to explain why you want to do something.
So today we’re looking at narrative tenses that will help you write a good story: past simple and past continuous. Why do we use the past continuous when we’re writing stories? Why not use the past simple all the time?
Great question. The past simple works well when we want to list things that happened. But stories get more interesting when we use the past continuous too, so the past simple AND continuous.
Why’s that?
The past continuous brings stories alive. It adds extra information and helps us paint pictures in our mind

Past simple (Last October, three brothers set off from Florida) refers to...
A
a finished event
B
an action already in progress when something else happened

When to use past simple?
to describe an action that happened and finished in the past. We commonly use it to give the order of events in a narrative.
E.g.
  • When I lived on the island, I enjoyed walking on the beach in the early morning with my best friend.
  • When the car stopped, we all got out.
  • Two weeks ago, something very strange happened

When to use past continuous
1)  for background information and to describe a scene or situation that continued for some time.
E.g.
  • At 6 o’clock that evening my dog was still missing
  • It was a hot day and the sun was shining.
2) We often use the past simple and past continuous together when one action (past simple) interrupts another (past continuous)
E.g
  • She was watching the news when she heard the loud noise outside.
  •  I was walking on the pavement when I saw a cat in the tree
  • While I was listening to music, my mother called me

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

WHILE VS. WHEN

"when" is most often followed by the verb tense Simple Past,

"while" is usually followed by Past Continuous. "While" expresses the idea of "during that time."
When to use past continuous
3. Parrarel actions
  • While Ellen was reading, Tim was watching television.
  • I was studying while he was making dinner.
