When do we use the present continuous again?

So when do you think we use the past continuous?

Past continuous

When?           Things that were going on in at a specific moment                              in the past

How?              was/were + (verb+ing)

Examples:    I was walking to school when I saw Angie..

                          They were playing a game when they fell asleep.

                           She was taking a shower when the phone rang.

Is this the past continuous?
My mom was trying to call my uncle when he walked in.
