Modal verbs
Are a special kind of verb.

Example of modal verbs: Can/could/should/to have to and must

Today we are going to look at the following modal verbs:
Can
to be able to
could
negatives

Can and to be able to
Can
You use the modal verb can for the following things:
  • To make a request
  • To ask for (or give) permission
  • To talk about possibilities and abilities
Examples:
1. Can you pass the salt?
2. if he's not feeling well, he can take the day off
To be able to
  • ONLY USED TO TALK ABOUT SOMEONE'S POSSIBILITY OR ABILITIES
  • Examples:
  1. Luckily, I was able to help him.

Could
Could is the past tense of can.
You can also use could for the following things:
  • to ask a question in a more formal or polite way 
  • to talk about the possibility that something will happen in the future.
Examples:
  • I could already count when I was two years old. 
  • Could you repeat that, please?
  • By the year 2050, our planet could look quite different.
