Jyoti is a 15-year-old girl in India. She comes from a poor migrant family. She did something brave. She cycled a long way with her father sitting on the back. Just to bring him home again.

Mohan Paswan, is a migrant worker. He had an accident in January. He was hurt badly and cannot work now. His daughter Jyoti (15) took care of him. But then, the coronavirus hit India. The country went into lockdown on March 25. There was no more work for these migrant workers. For them, no work means no food. The only thing they can do is go back to their villages. So, many started the long walk home. But, Paswan cannot walk home. Jyoti had a plan.

Cycling home

Jyoti used all of their money to buy a bicycle. They left New Delhi on May 8. Jyoti cycled and her father sat on the back. She cycled nearly 160 km a day. Sometimes, they got a lift on a truck. Strangers gave them food and water. Jyoti said: ‘It was a difficult journey because the weather was too hot. I had only one [thing] on my mind: to reach home.’ It took her just over 7 days. On May 16, she got her father home safely. She cycled more than 1,200 km.
