Je gebruikt de past continuous voor de langste activiteit in een zin:

He was swimming in the ocean when he saw a dolphin

Je gebruikt de past simple voor de kortste activiteit in een zin:

I was waiting an hour before you came to my house

Beide tijden kunnen in één zin worden gebruikt. Dit doe je wanneer je wilt uitdrukken dat er iets aan de gang was, terwijl er iets anders begon:

I was walking in the park when it started to rain.

A ball hit my head when I was taking a photo.

Modal verbs

Can = iets is mogelijk of toegestaan

Could  = verleden tijd van can, netjes 'please'

Have to: Je moet iets doen. Verplicht. 

Must: Diegene die het zegt vindt dat er iets gedaan moet worden.

Should = zou moeten doen. Advies geven.
