1. Who is Natasha and how does it remind Starr of what happened to Khalil?

Natasha was her best friend, who was shot during a drive-by shooting when they were very young. Starr was there and saw the whole thing. Khalil is now shot as well, with her as an eye witness.

2. What is Starr’s relationship with Uncle Carlos? Why is this important?

Uncle Carlos is her uncle, who raised her together with his sister, her mother, while Starr's dad was in prison.

3. What do we find out about Khalil’s mom, Ms. Brenda? What do we find out about what Khalil was doing before his death? How is this ironic?

Ms Brenda is a lifelong drug addict. Khalil was dealing in drugs in order to help his mum pay a debt. This is ironic, as he is contributing to a system his mother suffers from.

4. Starr compares herself to Will Smith on the TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air: “We once talked about how cool it was that Will remained himself in his new world. I slipped and said I wish I could be like that at school.” What is Starr talking about? How does this reflect Starr’s life?

She has two personalities, as it were. There's the Garden Heights Starr, who is completely herself with all the characteristics that are common in that part of the city and there's the Williamson Starr who speaks differently and acts differently, more similar to her friends and classmates there. 

According to this fragment, she would like to be the Garden Heights Starr at school too.

5. What is important about the way the news media is reporting on Khalil’s death? Why is this significant?

They suggest he was a drug dealer and had a gun in the car. This is significant because it creates the idea that the policeman who killed him was justified to do so.

6. What’s the truth about DeVante’s situation?

He stole money from King, which is why he was running / fleeing. 

7. Starr goes to Maya’s house to talk to both Hailey and Maya. What do we realize about Hailey? About Maya? How are they different?

Hailey has made racist comments about both Starr and Maya (in the past). Maya is like Starr in this respect and feels discriminated by her friend Hailey.

8. Maverick makes a surprising statement at the end of chapter 15, what is it? Do you think this is the right decision for the family?

They move to a house in a different neighbourhood.

9. What happens to the store at the end of chapter 24?

It burns down.
