 can, could, should & have to

What we are going to do today:

Ex. 51, 52, 53, 54 on p. 116 - 119 

Aan het eind van de les:

• weet je wat modal verbs zijn.
• weet je wanneer je deze moet gebruiken.
• kun je zinnen maken met modal verbs.

MODALS

• hulpwerkwoorden 

Bijv.  >   can, could, should, have to 

• bij de (hulp)werkwoorden voeg je geen "-s" achter he/she/it

• modals worden gevolgd door het hele werkwoord zonder "to"

Example:  He can write really fast.

CAN (kunnen)

Wordt gebruik om te praten over:

• vaardigheden 
• Eg:  I can ride a bicycle

• mogelijkheden
• Eg:  Stress can cause health problems

• toestemming
• Eg: Can I call you back?

COULD (zou kunnen)

wordt gebruik om te praten over:

• wat zou kunnen gebeuren
• Eg:  She could cycle to school instead of taking the bus.

• wat in het verleden konden of mochten
• Egs:    Could your first toy sing?
•                       He could not go outside after 9 pm.
• TIP! Could is de beleefde versie van can!

SHOULD

• wordt gebruik om advies te geven

Eg: You should stop eating fast food if you want to stay healthy. 

HAVE TO

• als je het hebt over verplichtingen.

Eg:  All drivers have to stop in front of a red traffic light!

• "not" met have to wordt gebruik om aan te geven dat er geen verplichting is.  

Eg:  She does not have to go to the gym.

Modals veranderen meestal niet van vorm

I	should	go	to school.
You	should	go	to school.
He/She/It	should	go	to school.
We	should	go	to school.
They	should	go	to school.

Have to

Dit is een modal die wel verandert:

I	have to	go	to school.
You	have to	go	to school.
He/she/it	has to	go	to school.
We	have to	go	to school
They	have to	go	to school
