Grammar 5.1 

ADJECTIVE = Een bijvoeglijk naamwoord zegt iets over wat iets is. 

Een adjective staat vóór een noun (zelfstandig naamwoord)

He dropped the hot plate.

I have a black cat.

The small boy ran down the street.

What a beautiful view!

Use of ADJECTIVE

After a linking verb:

He seems tired.

The view is beautiful.

The weather became cold.

My cat is black.

(Linking verbs are verbs like 'be', 'become' and 'seem' which are not actions but instead link the subject to an adjective, noun or phrase that gives us more information about the subject. 

 ADVERB: Een bijwoord geeft aan hoe iets gebeurt (hoe snel, hoe vaak, hoe mooi, enzovoort).

Een ADVERB zegt iets over:

1. een werkwoord (a verb)
2. een bijvoeglijk naamwoord (an adjective)
3. een ander bijwoord (adverb)

Adverbs:

1) She sings beautifully. (beautiful +ly)

2) They worked quickly. (quick + ly)

(adverb zegt iets over verb)

3) They are usually late. 

(Adverb zegt iets over adjective).

4) The bus drove extremely slowly. 

(Adverb zegt iets over andere adverb)

He is a ......... cook.
