Which words do you expect to be used?

Read the following text

Dog attack

Jessica Johnson was out walking with her husband when she was attacked by an unsupervised Alsatian dog. Jessica's leg was bitten, and she had to have stitches in two wounds. Two days later, because the wounds had become infected, Jessica was admitted to hospital. Even after she was discharged, she needed further treatment from her GP and she was told to rest for two weeks.

Jessica is self-employed and her business was affected while she was sick. Also, the trousers and shoes she'd been wearing at the time of the attack were ruined by bloodstains, and had to be thrown away.

Jessica told us, "I'm now trying to get compensation from the owners of the dog."

Which sentence was used in the text?

1. An unsupervised Alsation dog attacked her.
2. She was attacked by an unsupervised Alsation dog.

What was the difference between the two sentences?

Why was one of them more appropriate in this text?

Passives

What makes a sentence passive?

The combination of 'to be' + past participle (volt. dlw) makes a sentence passive

The woman is bitten (by the dog).

The wound was stitched (by the doctor).

ACTIVE= He is stealing a bike.

ACTIVE

ONDERWERP = WIE /WAT het doet staat vooraan de zin.

PASSIVE: The bike is stolen.

How to recognize a passive sentence...

- Check if there is a form of 'to be' used (am, are, is, was, were)

- Is it followed by a participle (volt. dlw)?

- Is it followed by 'by + noun or pronoun? If not, can it be followed by  'by my sister?

Are all answers 'yes'? Congratulations, you have a passive sentence.

Cricket is played in Australia.

You need to add a form of 'to be' and a past participle
