What is matter?

Slide 1 - Woordweb

Everything is made of matter

  • Has mass
  • Takes up space

There are three state of matter

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

What is the three state of matter?

Slide 3 - Open vraag

Comparing the states

Properties of solid, liquid and gases

Make a table of the properties of the three states of matter

Hint: Shape, volume, density and more

Slide 7 - Open vraag

First idea of matter

  1. Discovery of fire --->  Cook food, bake clay and make bricks
  2. Around 600BCE, the Greeks were fascinated by the way substance can change from one form to another
  3. Thales----> all substance are made from single element
  4. First 4 elements- air, water, fire and earth. This theory was used for 2000 years
  5. Democritus: Substance can be divided into tiny piece until it cannot be divided anymore, atom
  6. Investigation leads to particle theory
  7. Modern days: electron microscope can see the arrangement of atoms

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

The particle theory of matter

Matter is made of particle so tiny, it cannot be seen with naked eye.

Different substance are made of different particle or different size.

They are called atom or molecules

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Predict the particles is solid, liquid and gas
timer
3:00

Slide 10 - Open vraag

Solid
Strong forces holding particles together
Form orderly arrangement called lattice
Particles move a little

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

Liquid
Forces holding particles together are strong but weaker than solid
Particles can change position by sliding over each other

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Gas
Forces of attraction between particles are very small
Particles can move away from each other and travel in all direction
They hit each other, bounce and change directions

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

According to the particle theory, why do liquid flows but solid do not?
timer

Slide 14 - Open vraag

Tiny particles that cannot be seen by naked eye are called...
A
Atom
B
Molecule
C

D
All of above

Slide 15 - Quizvraag

Particles in solid can move freely
A
True
B
False

Slide 16 - Quizvraag

Gas has definite
A
volume
B
weight
C

Slide 17 - Quizvraag

Make a summary of today's lesson.
Think about how state of matter of a substance can be changed?
