• A larger than life character that often goes on some kind of journey or quest.
• In the course of his journey he will show his qualities.
• The protagonist
• (starts out as "unskilled," "vulnerable," and often with a chip on his/her shoulder

What is the (3-part) structure of an essay?

An essay consists of three parts

• Introduction
• Body
• Conclusion 

What does an introduction do?

Introduction:

1. introduces (duh!) the subject of your essay
2. convinces the reader to read your text
3. establishes the argument your essay is going to produce through the formulation of a THESIS STATEMENT. 

What does the "body" of a text do?

Body

1. Provides evidence for your thesis statement
2. Supports evidence with examples 

What does a conclusion do?

Conclusion

1. Helps the reader focus by re-establishing, in different words, the main idea of your essay
2. does NOT argue new points
3. Concludes with a catchy, memorable final sentence.
