"Special schools may disapprove students who are gay if the school is providing a safe learning environment."

A little history lesson:
Hundred years ago society used to be divided (liberal, catholic, protestant)

Each group had their own social system (incl. newspaper, schools, television network)

Because no group was a majority, they made a compromise. Sinds 1917 there is article 23. The right to found a school, to choose your own religious or philosophical direction and to organize it in your own way. As long as the schools comply by the standards of the government.

So you have 'special schools', like: catholic or islamic or schools with a special school concept and and 'neutral' schools.

Schools are funded by government
How many people consider homosexuality acceptable? (% NL, EST)

  • Of the religious people 46% is positive
  • Of the non religious people  77% is positive

(Source: movisie)

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

The majority in Holland thinks that a relationship between people of the same sex is okay. They say that everyone should live the live that they want.

When you look at the religious people in Holland, 46% is positive. Of the non religious people 77% is positive about a gay relationship.

The minority of the people is not okay with a gay relationship. The main argument is that the Bible says that a relationship is supposed to be between a man and a woman.
Perspective Estonia (nation)
  • 41% of the respondents think that homosexuality is mostly acceptable in society.
  • 59% of the Estonian-speaking population and 29% of the non-Estonian speaking population support the Act of partnership.

Perspective classroom Estonia
  • In Estonia there isn't a sexual orientation topic in the curriculum. It is the teacher's willingness and possibility to talk about the topic in different grades and different subjects.
  • There are teaching materials made by communities of stakeholders to use but whether the teacher chooses to talk about it or not is up to the teacher.

Conclusion
"We shouldn’t be afraid to talk about it or ignore the topic. You don't have to agree, you can build bridges and meet in the middle. That is the first step in acceptance."
