a passive and an active sentence.

The passive tense 

My sister got attacked by pengiuns

Penguins attacked my sister

When do you use the Passive tense?

Active

The subject performs an action 

My boyfriend plays the guitar

I walk the dog. 

Passive 

The subject is receiving/undergoing an action

The guitar is played by my boyfriend.

The dog is walked by me.

Passive voice

Quite popular in news episodes 

In the passive voice it is not that important WHO did the action, the action/the result is most important 

Let's go back to my example: 

Example

My sister got attacked by pengiuns

I want to emphasize that my sister was a victim

 

Penguins attacked my sister 

I want to emphasize that it was penguins that attacked

More innocent example then

My brother drives me to school/ I am driven to school

My mom cooks Italian food / Italian food is cooked by my mom.

I did the laundry / the laundry was done by me

I washed the car /  the car was washed by me 

Conclusion:
How do we make the Passive tense?

Rules:

So:

Present tense ---> am/are/is + voltooid deelwoord (3e rijtje)

Past tense ---> was/were + voltooid deelwoord

Many many years ago (1620) a ship sailed from Leiden to Plymouth America. 

On board were the so called settlers who were looking for religious freedom

The first thanksgiving

The settlers met the indigenous 

people of America and were welcomed

with open arms. 

The first thanksgiving was to celebrate

the first succesfull harvest 

What do they celebrate? 

Well, they don't really agree on that

They celebrate it anyway

Relgious freedom, good harvest, being able to stuff yourself with turkey? 

What is typical for thanksgiving?

Typical thanksgiving

Stuffed turkey

Eating until you feel as stuffed

as the turkey is 

Pumpkin pie

Plomping on te couch to watch

the parade 

The thanksgiving parade 

A tradition since 1924

A massive parade presented by a department store, broadcasted live on television

Is this the only parade? No.. 

Would you want to celebrate thanksgiving once?
Why?
