Origins of Saint Valentine's Day
PaganLupercalia was an ancient, possibly pre-Roman pastoral annual festival, observed in the city of Rome between 13–15 February to avert evil spirits and purify the city, releasing health and fertility. Also called dies Februatus.

- Legend I: St. Valentine - a Roman priest and physician martyred during the persecution of Christians by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus about 270.
- Legend II: The bishop of Terni, Italy, who was martyred in Rome.
Legends
- St. Valentine signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and healed from blindness. He defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from war.
