What is a 'polis'?

Greece

Greece wasn't one big country like Egypt. It was divided into poleis (plural). 

Polis/Poleis: city state

City state: a country as big as a city

Name the groups that were not seen as free citizens in Greece

When do you have a democracy?

1. When a few families pick leaders/decisions
2. When the priests pick the leaders/decisions
3. When the people vote for leaders/decisions

Democracy

Only Athens had democracy. But: 

- Not for slaves 

- Not for outsiders 

- Not for women

The Greeks lived in different polis (countries) but we still treat them as one group. Why? 

- They had the same language

- They would work together if there was a crisis
