After Robespierre died, France was governed by a small group of rich men.  

A lot of people were angry again, because: 

- food was expensive

- a lot of wars

- no more democracy

Napoleon in Europe

• Napoleon wanted to spread the ideas of the French Revolution in Europe
• This is why he starts wars to conquer European countries 

            → Continental Sytem: a ban on all trade regarding England

• Russia refused
• Napoleon invades Russia 

Napoleon in Europe

• Russia wins the war and Napoleon gets banned to Elba. 
• He escapes and starts building a new army.
• Again, he gets defeated 
• 1815: Waterloo

• This time he gets banned to St. Helena

• Napoleon crowns his brother king of the Netherlands. 
• The NL is a kingdom again and the French laws apply. 
• This means that:
        - registry of citizens:
        - French in school became obligatory
