By the end of this lesson students can.....

- recognise when to use the present perfect and can formulate sentences in this tense

- recognise the present perfect signal words

- recognise what the past participle irregular verb is and know were to find this

 I have lived in Obdam for more than 21 years. I am 44 years old.  I have three daughters.  I have been married for the last 19 years. Tonight I am cooking a spicy Indian curry for dinner.  I haven't started watching the series "Lucifer" on Netflix yet.  I have been reading e-books rather than paper books for the last 8 years.  I have travelled back to South Africa several times in the last 21 years.  I have taught many English classes at this school.  I have an identical twin sister.

Present perfect

The Present Perfect is used to....

...shows an action or situation that started in the past and continues in the present.  (laat een actie zien dat begon in het verleden en gaat door in het tegenwoordige tijd)

I have lived in Bristol since 1984 (= and I still do / en ik woon nog steeds in Bristol)

The Present Perfect is used to....

...shows an action performed during a period that has not yet finished. (laat een actie zien in een periode die nog niet over is)

She has been to the cinema twice this week 

(= and the week isn't over yet so she may go to the cinema again / de week is nog niet over dus misschien gaat ze nog een keer naar de film)

The Present Perfect is used to....

....show a repeated action in an unspecified period between the past and now. (herhaaldlijke actie in het verleden. de wanneer is niet belangrijk)

We have visited Portugal several times.

The Present Perfect is used to....

An action that was completed in the very recent past, expressed by 'just'. (recentelijk complete actie)

I have just finished my work.

(= letterlijk net klaar met werken)

The Present Perfect is used to....

An action when the time is not important. (een actie in het verleden. De wanneer is niet belangrijk)

He has read 'The Hobbit'. (= the result of his reading is important / dat hij de boek heeft gelezen is belangrijk niet wanneer)
