3.5 Present Perfect

Present Perfect: have/has verb+ed or past participle (3rd irr.v.)

• An action/event that started in the past and is relevant in the present -> She hasn't eaten all day. (= She's hungry now...:()

• Situations that started in the past and continue up to now
  -> I have taught English at this school for 4 years now.

• Life experiences -> Have you ever broken a bone?

past simple

= talk about finished actions in the past. You usually say when they happened --> Last weekend I went to Amsterdam. She ate a sandwich yesterday. He slept until 12pm.

Present Perfect: have/has verb+ed or irr. verb

Time expressions: for, yet, never, ever, just, already,

and since = FYNE JAS

She has lived on her own since 2019.

                                              = you never say exactly WHEN.

3.5 Present Perfect

Use the Present Perfect with JUST (=net):

= when something happened recently (=onlangs)

(Emily's) Emily has just made dinner. 

Tino and Tina have just left the chat. 

Just is written in the middle of the PP

Use the Present Perfect with YET (=nog):

= when sth hasn't happened YET but it probably will 

They haven't handed in their work yet.

I haven't taken down the Christmas tree yet. 

Yet is written at the end of the sentence.

Use the Present Perfect with ALREADY (= al):

= when sth happened earlier than expected

Donald Trump has already left the White House. 

Ms. Dangerfield has already checked the projects.

Already is written in the middle of the PP

Present Perfect w/ SINCE & FOR (4.2)

• ?: use HOW LONG + have + past participle (verbED / 3rd column) ?
  = For how long have you had your laptop?

• -> exact point in time when it started --> I've had my laptop since 2020.

• -> period of time = duration --> I have had my laptop for 3 years.
