- Was the first president of the United States

- He served two terms from 1789-1797

-Washington played a central role before and during the American Revolution

(1732-99)

Early Life

-The Washington family was a wealthy Virginia planter family.
-Made their fortune through land speculation and the cultavation of tabaco
-He did not have a formal education but he attended the Lower Church School in Hartfield.  

An Officer and Gentleman Farmer

-No previous military experience

-He was made commander of the Virginia Militia

-He saw action in the French and Indian War

-He married Martha Dandridge, a wealthy widow.

-They had no children together.

George Washington during American Revolutionary War

-He experienced firshand the effects of rising taxes imposed by British.

-This pushed him to believe

 it would be better to declaire independence.
