We use this in positive sentences.

One syllable

One syllable ending in -e

One syllable ending in vowel + consonant 

Small - smaller - smallest / dark - darker - darkest

Nice - nicer - nicest / cute - cuter - cutest

Big - bigger - biggest / wet - wetter - wettest 

Compare 3 people by using the adjective: happy
