Historical background

The conflict intensified in the 17th century, when the English Protestant rulers confiscated land from Irish Catholic landowners and replaced them with Protestant settlers from England and Scotland. This led to a deep-seated resentment among Irish Catholics, who felt that their rights and interests were being ignored and marginalized.

Why did the Troubles happen?

• Ireland gained independence in 1921. 
• While Ireland was fully independent, Northern Ireland remained under British rule
• Catholic communities in cities like Belfast and Derry (legally called Londonderry) complained of discrimination and unfair treatment by the Protestant-controlled government and police forces

Ask the students if they know the differences between Catholics and Protestants and what they think might have caused the disagreements.
