  • What do we use the first conditional for?
  • To describe a possible situation that will happen if a condition is met.

  • What is an example of a first conditional?
  • If I see her, I'll tell her.
  • She'll be late if the train is delayed.

  • Something that is theoritically possible, but not likely to happen.

Examples of second condiotnal
if + past simple, would + verb (without 'to')

  • If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house. (I probably won't win the lottery, it's a one in 14 million chance)
  • I would tell you the answer if I knew what it was. (I don't know the answer)
  • If I were you, I would say sorry straight away. (Are you the other person?)

First and third person singular (I, he, she, it)
WERE is used instead of WAS

If I were you, I would take the job.
If he were taller, he would be able to reach the top shelf.
If it were warmer, the heating would not come on.
