Learning objectives
  • You can explain ways that a house loses heat.
  • You can explain how a dynamic equilibrium is reached between heat loss and heat production.
  • You can explain how you can reduce heat loss in a house.

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Insulation is limiting.

Heat insulation limits the heat from leaving the house.

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Heat transports from high to low temperatures.

Conduction
Radiation
Convection

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Heat loss due to conduction
Heat loss through a substance: Conductors such as metals transmit heat quickly. That means they lose a lot of heat.
Insulators like glass/plastic/paper conduct heat poorly. As a result, you have little heat loss.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Heat loss through flow
Heating of a liquid or gas -> convection

You counteract heat loss through convection by ensuring that warm air cannot escape.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Heat loss through radiation
You prevent heat loss through radiation by reflecting the radiation back. You can do this by using reflective material.

Through an (intermediate) substance. Substance does not move but transfers heat to the next particle of the substance.
The particles of the (intermediate) substance heat up and move themselves to a point where they release the heat again.
Heat is radiated from one point to another without an intermediate substance.

Reducing heat loss
Insulating !
  • hr +++ glas instead of single and double glass
  • Filling cavity wall with insulation material.
  • Insulate roofs and floors.
  • Insulate heating pipes.
  • Cover surfaces with foil (behind heating).
  • Seal gaps with a draft strip.

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

Cavity wall insulation
The cavity is a space between the interior and exterior walls. This space consists of air.
Air also insulates, but insulating material can optimize this.

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

Floor and ceiling insulation
The ceilings and floors are also a place where you lose heat. You can solve this through insulation.

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

Double glass
Single glass consists of 1 layer of glass. Double glass has 2 layers of glass with a space of air (or gas) between them.
