Politics

The prime minister, ministers, MP's all gather in the Houses of Parliament. 

Traditionally the Prime minister always lives around the corner from the Houses of Parliament at 10 Downing Street.

National Holidays

The most important holidays in England are:

• 25 & 26 December: Christmas Eve and Boxing Day
• 31 December: New Years Eve
• 5 November: Guy Fawkes night or Bonfire Night

Christmas

Traditionally Christmas dinner in England is on Christmas eve and it consists of a roast Turkey, Brussel sprouts and roast potatoes. Yum yum!

On Boxing Day (26 December) the shops are open and there is a big sale.

Guy Fawkes night

Guy Fawkes night is also called Bonfire night. 
The English celebrate that Guy Fawkes was prevented from blowing up the Houses of Parliament with gunpowder.
They celebrate the evening with fireworks and bonfires.

Food

England's most famous dish is Fish and Chips. The fish is fried in batter and traditionally served with chips sprinkled with salt and vinegar and mushy peas.

The most popular sport in England is football. Second is boxing followed by cricket in third place and rugby in fourth place.
Most people outside England find cricket difficult to follow. It's a bit like baseball in America but with more rules.

Culture

Shakespeare is England's most famous writer. He wrote plays such as Romeo and Juliet as well as poetry. He lived from 1564 until 1616 and built a theater in London called the Globe.
He invented words and expressions that we still use today such as eye, lonely, being in a pickle, fashionable.
