The nervous system

The nervous system is made up of:

• the central nervous system 

              --> Brain + spinal cord

• the nerves.  

the nerves connect the central nervous system to all parts of the body.

The central nervous system 

is divided into two major parts: 

• the brain and 
• the spinal cord.

The Peripheral nervous system

• nerves in the rest of your body

FUNCTION

Central nervous system

1. receives nerve impulses from the sensory receptors
2. sense!!!
3. response: sends nerve impulses to muscles + glands

THE BRAIN

•  impulses are interpreted 
• 100 billion neurons
• become aware 
• think about your responses. 
• is divided into three major parts.

3 PARTS OF THE BRAIN:

CEREBRUM: Thinking  , the largest part of the brain.  impulses from different sensory receptors are interpreted , memories 

CEREBELLUM: coordinates your movements + balance.

BRAIN STEM:  connects the brain+ spinal cord, controls : breathing, blood pressure and your heartbeat.

SPINAL CORD

 connects the brain -  peripheral nervous system.

 located within the bones of the backbone (or spine) 

to protect it.
