New grammar: Conditionals

Let's see if you remember these words from last week...

Conditionals

• Conditionals zijn voorwaardelijke zinnen: als ..... , dan ......
• Bestaat uit een hoofdzin en een zinsdeel met if.
• Er zijn vier soorten conditionals: zero, first, second, third.

First conditional

If you don't listen to me right now, I will remove you from this class.

(Als je niet luistert.... dan.....)

if + present simple   /     will + infinitive verb

Wanneer gebruiken we de 'first conditional'? 

Wordt gebruikt als het best waarschijnlijk is dat iets gaat gebeuren (maar niet 100% zeker!)

Wanneer het om een alledaagse situatie gaat

If zin - hoofdzin

Present simple -  will+ heel werkwoord

If Bob leaves school, we will be sad.

Second conditional

Gebruik: als het gaat over iets wat niet zo waarschijnlijk is dat het ooit zal gebeuren/ iets in je fantasie, nu of in de toekomst.

Vorm: if + past simple, would + hele werkwoord

If I were you, I would do that

If  I knew Daniel was leaving us, I  would be   diappointed.

If you bought that car, you would not have to go on foot.

Second conditional

If + past simple + would + infinitive

If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house

Unlikely situation

• One sentence
• Two clauses

- If clause: if + present simple

- Main clause: will + infinitive*

He will help you if you ask him

Usage: to talk about a real or very likely situation 

• One sentence
• Two clauses

- If clause: if + past simple

- Main clause: would + infinitive

He would help you if you asked him

Usage: to talk about imaginary, unlikely situations (hypothetical)

First Conditonal

*Infinitive = whole verb (without to). Examples: 'be,' 'go,' 'make,' 'study,' etc

Second conditional

if + past simple,

hoofdzin - would+ ww

If I won  $1.000.000, I would quit my job. 

First conditional:
If we ..... (eat) all this cake, we ..... (feel) sick.

1. eat / will feel
2. ate / will feel
3. will eat / feel
4. will eat / will feel

Real conditionals:
a first conditional refers to

1. situation in the past
2. possible (future) situation

Second conditional
refers to ....

1. a future, real situation
2. un unreal, imaginary situation

First conditional:
If I ... (have) enough money, I ... (buy) new shoes.

1. have - will buy
2. will have - buy
3. have - buy
4. will have - will have

Second conditionals:
If we .... (live) in Mexico, I ...... (speak) Spanish.

1. Lives / would speak
2. Lived / would speak
3. Lived / 'd speak
4. Live / would speak

Second conditional. Complete the sentence:
If I found a wallet in the street, I...
(take) it to the police.
