28th June 1914; Franz Ferdinand of Austria is assassinated. 

He was visiting Sarajevo in Bosnia.

Shot by 19 year old Bosnian nationalist; Gavrilo Princip

This had huge consequences!

The Serbian government was blamed for the attack.

Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. 

Chain reaction:

- Russia would defend its ally Serbia against Austria-Hungary

- Germany (ally of Austria-Hungary) declared war on Russia

- France and Eng (allies of Russia) got involved as well.

The war started on the Balkan, but spread rapidly through Eu. 

Germany was the first to attack and invaded Belgium to move down to France. Germany had enemies on 2 fronts.

Eastern Front: Russia (big army, but outdated weapons)

Western Front France and GB
