Following a baseball game that nearly became a religious war, two Jewish boys become friends. Danny comes from the strict Hasidic sect that keeps him bound in centuries of orthodoxy. Reuven is brought up by a father patently aware of the twentieth century. Everything tries to destroy their friendship, but they use honesty with each other as a shield and it proves an impenetrable protection.

WINNER OF THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE 2008 Balram Halwai is the White Tiger - the smartest boy in his village. His family is too poor for him to afford for him to finish school and he has to work in a teashop. But Balram gets his break when a rich man hires him as a chauffeur, and takes him to live in Delhi.  He becomes increasingly aware of immense wealth and opportunity all around him, while knowing that he will never be able to gain access to that world. Until he realizes that there is one way he can become part of this glamorous new India - by murdering his master. 

The White Tiger presents a raw and unromanticised India, both thrilling and shocking - from the desperate, almost lawless villages along the Ganges, to the booming Wild South of Bangalore and its technology and outsourcing centres.

In 2017, 4.1 billion people were living in urban areas.

  

This means over half of the world (55%) live in urban settings. The UN estimates this milestone event – when the number of people in urban areas overtook the number in rural settings – occurred in 2007.
