Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Describe how you feel right now.
😒🙁😐🙂😃

Slide 2 - Poll

We are learning to:
  • name appropriate apparatus for the measurement of time, temperature, mass and volume, including:
(a) stopwatches
(b) thermometers
(c) balances
(d) burettes
(e) volumetric pipettes
(f) measuring cylinders
(g) gas syringes

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

We are learning to:
  • suggest advantages and disadvantages of experimental methods and apparatus
  • P1 - use equipment and materials accurately and safely
  • P2 - develop observational and problem-solving skills
  • P5 - transfer the experimental skills acquired to unfamiliar contexts
  • P7 - develop an interest and enjoyment in science

Activity 1- Element Quiz 01
Instructions:
  • Ten symbols of elements will be shown.
  • Name these ten elements.
  • Quizizz will be used for this activity.
  • Marks will be based on the number of correctly-named elements.

Activity 2- Reading Assignment
Instructions:

  • You should have done your reading beforehand on page 405 of your coursebook, "Safe Drinking Water For All".
  • In Moodle, answer the given questions with your study pair. Both of you must type your replies.
  • Please feel free to comment on others' responses as well.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Expected Responses

Portable distillation units
  • Strengths: Provide access to distilled water in remote areas without need for large/expensive equipment/ May be powered by renewable sources.
  • Weaknesses: If using solar power, the unit will only operate under certain conditions / Produce limited amounts of clean water / May be limited access to replacement parts if there is a failure / Would need to be very robust if used in the field / May require training in safe use / Could be expensive.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Expected Responses
Desalination units
  • Strengths: Provide access to drinking water in areas with access to seawater but limited freshwater / Can be run continuously / Proven technology.
  • Weaknesses: May be limited access to parts if there is a failure / The waste product can be toxic to marine and coastal ecosystems / Energy intensive as require high temperature and pressure / Require training / Could be expensive.

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Would you drink untreated river water using one of these straws?
YES
NO

Slide 11 - Poll

Expected Responses
Filter Straw: Yes or No?
  • The filter straw needs to remove particles of sand/silt / mud and harmful microbes such as bacteria that can cause disease.

Activity 3- Experimental investigation analysis
Instructions:
  • Read the given copy of a sample investigation.
  • Highlight and label in the copy the:
- Problem or Investigation question
- Notes or relevant information from sources
- Experimental plan to test the hypothesis/idea
- Variables: Independent, Dependent, Controlled, Uncontrolled
- Apparatus and chemicals needed/ used
- Method of experiment
- Data and analysis
- Safety and Risk reduction Procedures
- Conclusion

Slide 17 - Tekstslide

Points to Remember in Designing an Investigation
  • correct choice of apparatus and which equipment to use and write a method explaining how to use it
  • consider the level of accuracy
  • consider how to control variables
  • identify sources of error
  • precautionary measures to minimise safety concerns

Activity 4- Laboratory Apparatus and Equipment
Instructions:
  • Fifteen pictures will be shown.
  • Name the apparatus/ equipment correctly.
  • Blooket will be used for this activity.
  • Marks will be based on the number of correctly-named lab materials.

Slide 20 - Tekstslide

Selecting the correct apparatus
  • Time
  • Temperature
  • Mass
  • Volume-liquids
  • Volume-gases

Slide 21 - Tekstslide

For Volumes of Liquids
  • For approximate volumes where high accuracy is not an essential factor, measuring(or graduated) cylinders are used.
  • Volumetric pipettes are the most accurate way of measuring a fixed volume ofliquid, usually 10 cm3 or 25 cm3
  • Burettes are the most accurate way of measuring a variable volume of liquid between 0 cm3 and 50 cm3 (e.g. in a titration).

Slide 22 - Tekstslide

For Volumes of Liquids

Slide 23 - Tekstslide

For Volumes of Gases
  • The volume of gas sometimes needs to be measured and is done by collecting it in a graduated measuring apparatus.
  • A gas syringe is usually the apparatus used.
