Slide 1 - Tekstslide

§4.4 Temperature & Heat

p. 182-183
exercises 30-41 pages 184-187

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

§4.4 - Learning Goals:
  • I can describe the concept of temperature, the different scales it can be measured on and the units that belong to those.
  •  I can convert temperatures between the Celsius and Kelvin scale.
  • I can describe the concept of heat and the units it can be measured in.
  • I can distinguish between the concepts of temperature and heat.
  • I can describe the concept of heat of combustion and use it to calculate the amount of energy released during combustion.

§4.4 - Keywords:
  • Heat
  • Temperature
  • Celcius
  • Kelvin
  • Heat of combustion

P.182-183

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Heat vs. Temp
  • Heat - total amount of kinetic energy of the molecules in substance, measured in joules.

  • Temperature - average amount of kinetic energy per molecule in a substance, measured in ºC or K.

Slide 7 - Video

Celcius vs Kelvin
  • Celsius (ºC) - Based on freezing (0 ºC) and boiling (100 ºC) of water

  • Kelvin (K) - Based on absolute zero (0 K), the lowest possible temperature, where particles stop moving.

P.182-183

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Heat of combustion
Combustion reactions:
  • exothermic, release a lot of heat
  • burning fuels produces heat that is used for many purposes.

Different fuels give off different amounts of heat, this is known as the heat of combustion.
