The Roman Republic

• The Roman Republic is ruled by the Senate ('council of wise old men'). These were rich Romans. 

• The people choose two consuls

every year.

• They were the rulers and head of the Senate in the Republic

Civil war

• everyone wanted to rule over Rome
• generals became very popular, the most powerful men of Rome fight over the power to rule. 

Julius Caesar murdered

• Julius Caesar is very succesful and becaomes more and more powerful. 
• He is killed in the senate by senators. 

Octavianus takes revenge

• Julius adopted son takes revenge on Juliuss opponents, taking them out one by one. .
  
• also his old alie Marcus Antonio and his lover Cleopatra

Imperator Caesar Augustus

• Octavian overcomes everyone and peace returns to the realm.
• The Senate thanks him and grants him the title imperator
• Augustus is the first emperor of the Roman Empire  (princeps)
