Session 7

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Learning objectives
By the end of the session, all learners will be able to:
Recap and recall factors that affect children's behavior in early years.
Understand the difference between effective and ineffective communication and how this can impact the formation of relationships in early years.
Explore and understand Albert Bandura's social learning theory.

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Starter Activity
On a A4 piece of paper, individually mind map all of the factors that can affect children's behaviour.

You need to consider how this can vary in accordance to age and stage of development.

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

Feedback
Did you consider the following?
  • Regressive behaviour (when children regress due to a change in their routines or environment. For example: a family who may have just welcome a new born baby, make cause regressive behaviour traits in children.
  • Withdrawal due to distress
  • Attention seeking behaviour
  • Antisocial behaviour
  • Self damaging behaviour (banging head against table) - this would need to be followed up.
  • Out of character behaviour
  • Anxiety or depression

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Which one these strategies do you feel is most used in your setting to promote effective behaviour management?
Educators working together to problem solve.
Setting rules and boundaries.
Activities to support self regulation
Discussions with children with or without visuals.
Working with parents / carers
Involving the children in setting rules and boundaries.

Slide 5 - Poll

Often how well children can communicate will affect their social and emotional development. Often indirectly it influences how well we are able to form and maintain friendships that are meaningful.
A child who has delayed communication or difficulties with confidence may:
* Feel unheard
*Demonstrate aggressive behaviour due to fustration
*Find it difficult bonding
*Could show inappropriate behaviour
A child who has good communication skills may:
*Express their own needs, interests and opinions.
* Feel heard and understood by others.
* Develop healthy relationships with others around them, to include practitioners and children.
* Know and understand what is expected from them.

In your books create a table to explain how biological factors and environmental factors affect communication skills and behaviour.
(3 x biological & 5 x environmental)

Albert Bandura - Social learning theory (1977)
A social learning theory was created by Bandura after the he researched how observing and modelling certain types of behaviour can cause a variation to our own attitudes and emotion responses.

Social learning theory is often the ‘bridge’ between traditional learning theory (behaviorism) and the cognitive approach.
This is because it focuses on how mental (cognitive) factors are involved in learning.
For example: If a child witnesses a form of behaviour in early years they are more likely to copy it.

Albert Bandura - The bobo Doll experiment
The bobo doll experiment was initially started in 1960's, Bandura conducted controlled experiments with children using bobo dolls. The experiments consisted of two different approaches. (1 x non aggressive approach & 1 x aggressive approach).
Children were exposed to mild aggressive behaviour, such as pushing the dolls. They watched an adult demonstrate this behaviour on a bobo doll.
Shortly after the child enters the room with the bobo doll, their behaviour resulted in copying the adult they have just watched.
Observations were made on the child during intervals for around 20 minutes per child . Overall 240 responses were recorded.

Project 3
I have amended your assignment brief for this specific project.
You will now access Sandbox on google classroom, you all have an individual one to be working on. You will create an informative fact sheet / poster to discuss the below in EY:

S2.19 - The student must be able to model and promote positive behaviours expected of children
S2.18 - The student must be able to encourage positive behaviours, including independence and confidence,
S2.20 - The student must be able to support children to manage their own behaviour in relation to others

Extension
Nearly all groups have referred on project 2 again.

We need to be mindful this is marked skills work.

This re-submission is due in December 2024 before Christmas.
