Learning Objectives 
By the end of the session, all learners will:
  1. Receive feedback for their mock exam for the CPD related question.
  2. Further re-explore the concept of CPD and the importance this holds for professionals.
  3. Assess examplar's to determine the validity and grade boundary for the response. 
  4. Re- attempt the CPD question utilising the feedback from the session.

What went well
  • Some of you identified some CPD strategies and applied these to context. 
  • Some of you identified how your skill set can be improved from the strategy you are highlighting.
  • Some of you linked it to your early years placement. 
Areas for improvement
  • Clear introduction to CPD response required prior to writing your answer. Providing an introduction is always important to anything you are writing. 
  • Use of academic terminology is important when writing your response. 
  • You need to discuss different approaches to CPD in your answer (shadowing, discussions, observations). 
  • You can self reflect on your observations that you did in part 1a, not in extensive detail but if you are able to reflect on them a little this can help. 
  • You need to be specific about your CPD opportunities to further discuss the positive outcome it will have for children in your setting. 
  • You need to state the positive impact it will have on your professional development and trainee student.

Why do we engage in CPD?
  • Identifying your strengths and weaknesses – often completed through peer to peer observations & appraisals.
  • Inviting professionals in to setting’s during team meetings.
  • Visit and approach other settings to see their practice.
  • Online training facilities
  • Having regular conversations with other practitioners and managers.
Approaches and strategies to CPD
- Shadowing a key worker in your placement 
- Working with parents and carers 
- Accepting feedback from assessor 
- Accepting feedback from placement mentor / key worker.
- Recording feedback or strategies shared. 
- Regular training or team meetings. 
- Discussion with other practitioners in the same setting.
- Self reflection (establishing something you need to improve from own reflective practice approaches)

Examples 

You have 2 examples of different responses to the CPD question.
You will need a highlighter and pen to analyse both examples and compare. 
It is important you are critical with what you are looking for. 
Use the feedback on slide 3 to assess the example's. 
It is important you don't become fixate on the common spelling or grammar error - that's just a human mistake. It is more about the content that is present.

On google classroom, you now complete the CPD table task. 

For this task you are required to identify 4 different strategies that are used to support professional development in early years. 

You will then explain how you can use this strategy to support your professional development. 
You must provide 1 reference per strategy - correctly referenced in line with Harvard standards.
