used to (past) = events or states  in the past that no longer happen now (vroeger, nu niet meer)

be used to (past, present and future) = something we are accustomed to, that is part of our life (gewend zijn aan)

Are paramedics used to working long hours?

get used to (past, present and future) = something we are becoming accustomed to; it may have seemed strange before, but it's normal now (gewend raken aan)

The rules

We use used to, would and the past simple to talk about repeated actions and habits in the past. However, we can only use used to and would if they no longer happen now.

I used to / would ride my bike every day 

(we can be sure that the subject no longer rides their bike every day)

I rode my bike every day 

(we can assume that the subject no longer rides their bike  every day, but we can't be sure. Statements in the past simple require  further information to clarify, for example:

I rode my bike every day when I was younger, but I don't anymore.

The rules

We cannot use 'would' to talk about past states (be, like, love, have, hate, want, need, believe, etc). 

She used to be happy.  NOT:  She would be happy

They used to be able to play the piano. NOT: They would be able to play the piano

I used to have a pet frog. NOT: I would have a pet frog

Summary

We use:

• 'used to' to talk about repeated past actions or habits and to describe past states  (be, like, love, have, hate, want, need, believe, etc)
• 'would' to talk about repeated past actions or habits, but NOT describe past states.

Used to vs Would

• Used to gebruiken we wanneer we praten over situaties of toestanden die in het verleden waar waren, maar nu niet meer:
  We used to live in New York when I was a kid.
  
  
• Used to en would kunnen we gebruiken om herhaalde acties of gewoontes in het verleden aan te geven:
  My father used / would smoke three packs a day.

Used to vs Would

• Would kunnen we dus niet gebruiken over situaties of toestanden die tegenwoordig anders zijn.
  We used to live in New York when I was a kid.
  Dus niet: We would live in New York when I was a kid.

Habitual behaviour - present

• to talk about habits and repeated actions in the present.
