William of Orange

• Part of the nobility
• Heir to the Principality of Orange
• Rebelt against Phillip II
• Took charge of the Geuzen
• Instigated 80 Years' War

Geuzen

• A mixed group (poor nobility, the unemployed,  adventurers, criminals, refugees from southern provinces)
• Protestants (and Catholics in the beginning)
• Their power came from their strong fleet (watergeuzen)
• Succesful in taking cities (Den Briel)

Alba

• Send to the Netherlands after the Iconoclasm with his army (10.000 soldiers)
• Spanish general and governor of The Netherlands
• Unleashed a reign of terror (Council of Troubles)
• Fought against the (water)Geuzen
• Losses were so high that he was forced to leave The Netherlands

Independence?

• The provinces have to work together
• They sign a treaty which says that each province can choose its own religion and that the Spanish have to leave
• The treaty doesn't last very long (most southern provinces side with the Spanish again)
• Act of Abjuration (nothern provinces) 1581
• The Dutch Republic 1588
