It's not a race-swapped version of the play. It plays differently when the actor is black, and not just black, but with an African accent (as opposed to Othello's upper-class English accent). It makes the racism a coping mechanism for what's really going on with him (my feeling about it is that it makes it resentment against how Othello managed to find success in English society, as opposed to Iago, and Iago deliberately gets racist about Othello to highlight that he'll never truly be "one of them"). It's a fascinating production and honestly I think Lucian Msamati is even better than Ian McKellen in the role.
