English is more than a Tool
English is so much more than just a language; it's a gateway to your interests, feelings; the rest of the world (world language).
 
You can only learn the language if you care about the context in which it's spoken/written. You CANNOT learn English if you hate or dislike it. It's just impossible.

But you can change the way you feel about it. You can turn hate and dislike into interest and maybe even like; and then you can learn

Opportunity
                                    What makes life interesting for you? What are you passionate about?

Link your interest for music, sports, gaming, movies/TV-shows, books, or any other type of interest to English.

Read about these things or watch movies/TV-shows, YouTube videos/interviews or do something else that involves your interest and the English language (be CREATIVE). Make yourself WANT to know what's being said when you're working on this. Then report back to me. 

Bonus: work on this in favour of the English in Mind homework (learning for your tests and doing your English in Mind homework becomes your own responsibility in that case; I won't check your work at the start of the lesson but I will expect you to do it. If you don't and you fail your tests it's your own fault). I will continue to discuss the homework and English in Mind tasks in class, so you'll still benefit from the classes.

Opportunity: Rules
Those who choose to do this will show me your progress on a weekly basis (every Monday) you'll hand in a written report in English (150 words per week).  I will give you feedback and notes on these reports.

Failure to hand in these assignments will result in you being banned from the Opportunity assignment.

If I notice you're not taking these assignments seriously you'll also be banned from the Opportunity

Those who've been banned from Opportunity will just continue with the English In Mind assignments with the rest of the class.

What to write: In these weekly reports you'll describe how you've been working on English via your interests every week; and what new words and English constructions you've learned. Tell me how this has been useful for you; how did it make you want to know the English that was being spoken?

Finally,  you'll still be expected to participate in class outside of these assignment. This is a bonus Opportunity! A chance for you to really start learning English if you're struggling with English. This is not for a grade; you're doing this for you.

Pre-listening:

  • What is the topic of the audio recording you're listening to? How do you know this?

  • What is the title of the recording? What does this tell you about the topic?

  • Read the first question before listening to the recording.

  • What are your expectations?

During Listening

  • ALWAYS read the question before the next part of the audio-recording.
  • This way you'll be prepared and you'll know what to listen out for.

  • Write down/underline keywords from the question

For example, here's a question about an audio-recording that discusses climate change:

1. Wat is een van grootste oorzaken van klimaatverandering?

What will you be focussing on? What do you expect to hear?
Focus on those words in the audio-recording that match words that appear in the question. In other words, focus on KEYWORDS
