SEA SHEPHERD FLEET

Sea Shepherd has the largest privately owned navy in the world, working
tirelessly to protect marine wildlife worldwide.

Our ships are crewed
mainly by volunteers and funded by our supporters who believe in
securing the future of the ocean.

When Sea Shepherd started in 1977 Captain Watson had no funds and no ship, but that didn’t stop him. With support from the Fund for Animals and RSPCA (USA) Captain Watson purchased our first vessel in 1978, called the Sea Shepherd.

Sea Shepherd heeft de grootste particuliere vloot ter wereld en werkt onvermoeibaar om het zeeleven wereldwijd te beschermen.

Onze schepen worden voornamelijk bemand door vrijwilligers en gefinancierd door onze supporters die geloven in het veiligstellen van de toekomst van de oceaan.

Toen Sea Shepherd in 1977 begon, had Paul Watson geen geld en geen schip, maar dat hield hem niet tegen. Met steun van het Fonds voor Dieren en RSPCA (VS) kocht Paul Watson in 1978 ons eerste schip, de Sea Shepherd.

The Ocean Warrior is our flagship vessel and is the first vessel in our history we have purchased as brand new. It was custom-made for us with funds awarded to Sea Shepherd Global by the Dutch Postcode Lottery’s “Dream Project”. The Ocean Warrior’s maiden campaign was Operation Nemesis.  The M/Y Ocean Warrior is 54m in length and is specifically designed to send to Antarctica to take on poachers.  It is as fast supply vessel and the fastest ship, with a top speed of over 30 knots. It carries a crew of 14

M/Y OCEAN WARRIOR

The Ocean Warrior is our flagship vessel and is the first vessel in our history we have purchased as brand new. It was custom-made for us with funds awarded to Sea Shepherd Global by the Dutch Postcode Lottery’s “Dream Project”. The Ocean Warrior’s maiden campaign was Operation Nemesis, Sea Shepherd’s 11th Antarctica Whale Defence Campaign. 

The M/Y Ocean Warrior is 54m in length and is specifically designed to send to Antarctica to take on poachers.  It is as fast supply vessel and the fastest ship we have ever had, with a top speed of over 30 knots. Which is faster than the Japanese harpoon vessels. It carries a crew of 14.  

De Ocean Warrior is ons vlaggenschip en is het eerste schip in onze geschiedenis dat we gloednieuw hebben gekocht. Het is voor ons op maat gemaakt met geld dat is toegekend aan Sea Shepherd Global door het "Dream Project" van de Nederlandse Postcode Loterij. De eerste campagne van de Ocean Warrior was Operatie Nemesis. De Ocean Warrior is 54 meter lang en is speciaal ontworpen om naar Antarctica te sturen om het op te nemen tegen stropers. Het is het snelste schip van de vloot met een topsnelheid van meer dan 30 knopen. Het heeft een bemanning van 14 personen vanuit de hele wereld.

M/Y BOB BARKER   In 2009 Sea Shepherd secretly purchased and refitted a former Norwegian whaler in Africa. It's first mission was Operation Waltzing Matilda. Interesting Fact: The Bob Barker originally operated as a whaling ship until 1962, and later confronted Sea Shepherd during its life as a Norwegian Coast Guard vessel.
The Bob is about 52m long and has a crew of around 36. 

M/Y BOB BARKER
Thanks to a $5 million contribution from the legendary American game show host Bob Barker, in 2009 Sea Shepherd secretly purchased and refitted a former Norwegian whaler in Africa. The ice-strengthened chaser boat quietly departed from Mauritius on December 18th for its first mission against the Japanese whaling fleet, Operation Waltzing Matilda. Interesting Fact: The Bob Barker originally operated as a whaling ship until 1962, and later confronted Sea Shepherd during its life as a Norwegian Coast Guard vessel.

The Bob is about 52m long and has a crew of around 36. The vessel has campaigned in Antarctica against the whalers and now in Africa where it is focusing on anti-poaching campaigns. It holds the record for the longest pursuit of a poacher, after chasing the Thunder from Antarctica to Sao Tome over 110 days.

In 2009 kocht en monteerde Sea Shepherd in het geheim een voormalige Noorse walvisvaarder in Afrika: De Bob Barker. De eerste missie was Operatie Waltzing Matilda. Interessant feit: De Bob Barker fungeerde oorspronkelijk als een walvisvaarder tot 1962, en werd later geconfronteerd met Sea Shepherd tijdens zijn leven als schip van de Noorse kustwacht. De Bob is ongeveer 52 meter lang en kan 36 bemanningsleden vervoeren

The M/Y Sam Simon was named after the Hollywood producer most famously known for developing The Simpsons, who served on Sea Shepherd’s Board of Advisors until his passing away in 2015. His generous donation made it possible to purchase the former Japanese vessel in 2012, when it joined its first Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign that December, Operation Zero Tolerance. Interesting Fact: The Sam Simon, originally named the Seifu Maru, was a Meteorological Observation Ship for the Japanese whaling fleet.

The Sam Simon was named after the Hollywood producer most famously known for developing The Simpsons, an animal rights advocate who served on Sea Shepherd’s Board of Advisors until his passing away in 2015. His generous donation made it possible to purchase the former Japanese vessel in 2012, when it joined its first Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign that December, Operation Zero Tolerance. Interesting Fact: The Sam Simon, originally named the Seifu Maru, was a Meteorological Observation Ship for the Japanese whaling fleet.

De Sam Simon is vernoemd naar de Hollywood-producent die vooral bekend staat om de ontwikkeling van The Simpsons, die tot zijn overlijden in 2015 in de raad van advies van Sea Shepherd zat. Zijn genereuze donatie maakte het mogelijk om het voormalige Japanse schip in 2012 te kopen en heeft deelgenomen aan zijn eerste campagne Operation Zero Tolerance. Interessant feit: de Sam Simon, oorspronkelijk de Seifu Maru genoemd, was een meteorologisch observatieschip voor de Japanse walvisvloot.

M/V STEVE IRWIN - RETIRED

M/V STEVE IRWIN - GEPENSIONEERD

Ons bekendste schip, de Steve Irwin en voormalig vlaggenschip, ging in december 2018 met pensioen. Het was een ex-Schots visserijpatrouillevaartuig gebouwd in 1975 dat we in 2006 hebben gekocht. Het is ongeveer 59 meter lang en weegt ongeveer 885 ton. Het kon 46 bemanningsleden vervoeren.

De Steve heette oorspronkelijk de Robert Hunter. De eerste expeditie was Operation Leviathan. Het schip werd in december 2007 omgedoopt tot M/Y Steve Irwin ter ere van de overleden Australische natuurbeschermer en aanhanger van Sea Shepherd. De Steve Irwin heeft meegedaan aan 18 campagnes, meer dan enig ander Sea Shepherd-schip in die tijd.

MV Farley Mowat, MV John Paul DeJoira and MV Sharpie are ex-US Coast Guard island class cutters, who have joined the Sea Shepherd fleet.  They are 34 metres long, reaching speeds of 25+ kn and carry a crew of 16.

Farley Mowat, John Paul DeJoira en Sharpie zijn voormalige kotters van de Amerikaanse kustwacht, die zich bij de Sea Shepherd-vloot hebben gevoegd. Ze zijn 34 meter lang, bereiken snelheden van meer dan 25 knopen en hebben een bemanning van 16.

R/V Martin Sheen

 Named in honour of long time supporter and actor Martin Sheen. It is our research vessel, which joined the fleet in 2014. It is just over 27m and crew of 6. The vessel has participated in research on whales, microplastics and impacts of salmon farms.

Genoemd ter ere van lange tijd supporter en acteur Martin Sheen. Het is ons onderzoeksschip, dat in 2014 aan de vloot is toegevoegd. Het is iets meer dan 27 meter lang en heeft 6 bemanningsleden.

Het schip heeft meegewerkt aan onderzoek naar walvissen, microplastics en effecten van zalmkwekerijen.

OUR WEAPONS IN THE FIGHT TO SAVE THE OCEANS

RHIBS or rigid hulled inflatable boats.  Most of our larger vessels have one or two RHIBS on board, to be used during campaigns.  The speed of these boats make them ideal for chasing down poaching vessels, they can then be boarded by the law enforcement officials we are working with.

De meeste van onze grotere schepen hebben één of twee RHIBS aan boord, die gebruikt kunnen worden tijdens campagnes. De snelheid van deze boten maakt ze ideaal voor het achtervolgen van stropers, ze kunnen dan aan boord worden genomen door de wetshandhavers waarmee we samenwerken.

OUR WEAPONS IN THE FIGHT TO SAVE THE OCEANS

Helicopters and drones – these are useful tools in our fight to defend the oceans. With helicopters we are able to fly longer distances to try and track down illegal poachers, this was very useful in chasing the whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean and being able to document their activities. 

Drones are our latest valuable weapon in this war.  Drones are able to fly at any time of day or night to document illegal fishing and locate illegal nets.

Helikopters en drones zijn handige hulpmiddelen in onze strijd om de oceanen te verdedigen. Met helikopters kunnen we grotere afstanden vliegen om illegale stropers op te sporen, dit was erg handig om de walvisvloot in de Zuidelijke Oceaan te achtervolgen en hun activiteiten te documenteren.

Drones zijn ons nieuwste waardevolle wapen in deze oorlog. Drones kunnen op elk moment van de dag of nacht vliegen om illegale visserij te documenteren en illegale netten te lokaliseren.

Photographers and videographers

Our photographers and videographers are key to documenting illegal activities.  Capturing the images and video of illegal operations provides evidence for law enforcement to use in prosecuting perpetrators and enables us to show the world what is taking place out on the oceans.

Onze fotografen en videografen zijn de sleutel tot het documenteren van illegale activiteiten. Het vastleggen van beelden en video's van illegale operaties levert bewijs voor wetshandhavers om daders te vervolgen en stelt ons in staat om de wereld te laten zien wat er op de oceanen gebeurt.
