Modal verbs zijn hulpwerkwoorden

Ze veranderen niet van vorm.

Het werkwoord dat na het hulpwerkwoord komt staat altijd in de vorm van het hele werkwoord.

Wat is het verschil?

I must go home

I should go home

I have to go home

Wat is het verschil?

I can drive a car

I could drive a car

I am able to drive a car

Can 

- possibility/mogelijkheid      Can you visit me next week ?

- ability/vaardigheid                  She can play the piano

- requests/verzoek                     Can you call me back this evening?

- permission/toestemming    Can I go to the concert ?

Could

- possibility             We could order pizza if you don't want to cook.

   

- polite request      Could you close the door, please ?

to be able to

=> ability (in staat zijn)

She broke her fingers, she is not able to play the piano.

Hoe gebruik je  modals met ontkenningen (negations)

Voeg not toe direct na de modal om een ontkenning te maken:

can → cannot (of kort: can’t)

must → must not (of mustn’t)

should → should not (of shouldn’t).

maar: not able to
