Je gebruikt can om te zeggen dat je iets kunt

Hij mag vanavond een film kijken

Can't (tekstblokje A)

Je gebruikt can't wanneer je wilt zeggen dat je iets niet kunt of niet mag (can't wordt gemaakt door can + not)

You can't swim here

Je kunt hier niet zwemmen

Could (tekstblokje B)

- Could betekent 'zou kunnen'

 I could phone for a taxi / Ik zou een taxi kunnen bellen

- Could betekent 'zou mogen'

You could go too / Je zou ook mogen gaan

- Could betekent 'kon'

She could see the lions / Ze kon de leeuwen zien

Couldn't (tekstblokje B)

Je gebruikt couldn't (samen gemaakt door could en not) om te zeggen dat iets NIET kon (verleden tijd)

She couldn't see the lions

Ze kon de leeuwen niet zien

Can of could (tekstblokje C)

Je kunt can en could ook gebruiken om een vraag te stellen. Je zet can of could dan aan het begin van de zin

- Can I ask you something? / Mag ik jou iets vragen?

- Could we see the animals? / Zouden we de dieren mogen zien? 

Let op: could is beleefder dan can!
