+/- 1880-1900: industrial revolution
+/- 1900-1960: A lot of factories in the western world. Ex: Philips in Eindhoven & Ford motor car in Detrout (USA)
Factories became big. A lot of houses were needed --> city grew
+/- 1960-1970: It became cheaper to move manufacturing department to Asia, where the salaries are lower.
+/- 1980: factory buildings were abandoned and had no functions anymore. A lot of unemployment.
Eindhoven: restructure, renovation, redevelop + Detroit: desolate, lot of people jobless & bankrupt

Vroeger was hier het bedrijventerrein van Philips, maar tegenwoordig is het een woonwijk en een plek voor culturele evenementen zoals de Dutch Designweek. Er staan nog enkele, originele fabrieksgebouwen van Philips en daar zit het Ketelhuis in.
