Introduction

Last week I bought some groceries. I got one apple (I needed it for a recipe okay? Don't judge). A couple of kiwis, some bananas and several vegetables. Besides my usual items, I also bought 18 bottles of ice tea because it was on sale. In total I went to two shops.

What do the bolded words have in common?

Plurals

• = meervoudsvorm
  
  
• singular = enkelvoud = 1 
• plural = 2 or more

• Basic rule:
• Add -s 
  
  
• But there a few spelling exceptions!
• Let's see if we can figure them out

Spelling exceptions

• One bus, two buses
• Rule: if the noun ends on an -s sound (sisklank) --> add
  -es
• One hobby, two hobbies
• Rule: consonant + y --> change y in to i + add -es
• Compare with day

• One wolf, two wolves
• Rule: ends on -f(e) --> change f to v + add -es
  
  
• One tomato, two tomatoes
• Rule: ends on -o --> add -es
• Compare with video 
  
  
• Then there are the irregulars
