Sentences with time reference

Sentences without time reference

I did my homework last night.

We didn’t go out last weekend.

She has been to London.

I have done my homework.

We haven’t been out for a while.

She went to London last year.

All these actions took place in the past.
The difference is the time reference.

I did my homework last night.                 past simple

I have done my homework.                       present perfect

She went to London last year.                  past simple

She has been to London.                            present perfect

We didn’t go out last weekend.                past simple

We haven’t been out for a while.              present perfect

Past simple / Present perfect

We use both for past actions.

Past simple = completed actions in the past, we know when it happened.

yesterday, last year, in 2018, a few years ago

Present perfect = experiences in someone’s lifetime, we don’t know/care when it happened, but it happened somewhere in the past

- Time is unknown or unimportant

I have been to New Zealand.

He has worn those shoes hundreds of times.

We haven’t seen her for quite some time.

Have they read the book White Fang ?

Yes, they have. / No, they haven’t.

Present perfect

[Subject] - [have/has] - [past participle]

I have visited Disneyland over 10 times.

You haven’t been to school in weeks.

He has never played Fortnite.

Has she ever seen any Marvel movies?

We have spent a lot of time on EPAS.
