Simple, Compound and Complex Sentences
Simple Sentences
A sentence with one verb and one subject

I work at AH on Saturdays.
Jenny and I walked together to school. 
Compound Sentences
When you join two simple sentences together. 
Usually joined with linking words:  for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (FANBOYS)

I want to go to school, but I am too sick. 
We were hungry, so we grabbed some lunch.
Complex Sentences
When you add a dependent clause to a simple sentence.
Usually joined with linking words:  because, although, after, when, before

She liked singing in front of the mirror when she was younger.
There were no pizzas left in the canteen before the game.

Present Simple

Past Simple
When something happened (and finished) in the past.

Present Continuous
When something is happening right now. 

Alice is walking the dog.
Past Continuous
 In past over longer period. Combined w/ past simple. 

My mother was fixing my phone when it started ringing. 
 


Present Perfect
Started in the past, result is still visible. 

I have walked all the way home, I'm tired now. 
Future Tenses
will, going to, present simple, present continuous, present perfect

I will pick you up from work later today.        I will have played most of the games by the time she arrives.
Past Perfect
Started in the past, result visible until another point 

I had already played five matches before I finally won.
