Relative pronouns verbinden 2 zinsdelen met elkaar. In het 2de zinsdeel wordt er meer info over een persoon of een ding in het 1ste zinsdeel geven.

This is the man.

He has been sick.

-> This is the man who has been sick.

Who

Who  gaat altijd om een persoon of personen:

• This is the girl who helped me
• There were some people who made a complaint.

Which

Which gaat altijd om dingen of dieren:

• This is the house, which he built himself.
• I gave him a letter, which he quickly put in his pocket.
• The match, which was cancelled, was on Saturday.

That

That kan gebruikt worden i.p.v. who or which

Maar aleen als er geen komma ervoor staat

• The cat which was lost has been found.
• The cat that was lost has been found.
• The cat, which was lost, has been found.
• The cat, that was lost, has been found.

Ø (nothing)

Wij kunnen Ø  (r.p. weglaten) als het niet het onderwerp van het zinsdeel is.

• The book  Ø  he bought is great.

he is het onderwerp , niet book, so Ø is ook goed!!!
